How time zones work
Time zones are regions that share the same standard time, generally defined as an offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) — for example, UTC-5 or UTC+9. Most zones are one hour apart, though a handful (like India's UTC+5:30 or Nepal's UTC+5:45) sit on a half-hour or 45-minute offset. Many zones also shift by an hour twice a year for daylight saving time, which this page accounts for automatically.

Why are some offsets 30 or 45 minutes instead of a full hour?
A handful of countries chose non-hour offsets historically — India and Sri Lanka use UTC+5:30, Nepal uses UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia use UTC+9:30, among others.
Does this list account for daylight saving time?
Yes, every time shown here reflects whichever offset (standard or daylight saving) is currently in effect for that location.
How many time zones are there in total?
There are 24 "nominal" hour-based zones, but including half-hour and 45-minute offsets used by some countries, there are closer to 38 distinct offsets observed around the world at any given time.

Time-zone abbreviations are not unique worldwide. CST can refer to different regions, so use a city or an IANA zone identifier when precision matters. Some regions use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets, and neighboring regions need not share daylight-saving rules.
