How military time works
Military (24-hour) time counts hours from 00 (midnight) to 23 (11 PM), so there's no need for AM or PM — 1300 is always 1:00 PM, and 0900 is always 9:00 AM. It removes the ambiguity of 12-hour time, which is why it's used by the military, hospitals, transit schedules, and much of the world outside the United States.
To convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time: if the hour is 13 or higher, subtract 12 and add "PM" (1400 → 2:00 PM). If it's between 01 and 11, just add "AM" (0930 → 9:30 AM). 00 is 12 AM (midnight) and 12 is 12 PM (noon).

Read midnight and noon without ambiguity
00:00 is midnight at the start of a date, while 12:00 is noon. 12:00 AM converts to 00:00; 12:00 PM stays 12:00. For hours from 13 through 23, subtract 12 to get the PM hour: 18:45 becomes 6:45 PM.
