Chess Clock

A two-player countdown clock. Tap your side after each move to pass the clock to your opponent.

A free chess timer for two players

Set the starting time per side (5 minutes is a common "blitz" setting) and an optional increment — extra seconds added to your clock every time you tap it, as in tournament play. Tap your own side right after you make your move: that stops your clock and starts your opponent's.

Works for chess, checkers, Scrabble, debate timing, or any two-player, turn-based game where you want to cap thinking time.

What increment should I use?

0 seconds is a straightforward countdown. A common tournament format is 5 minutes with a 3-second increment, sometimes written "5+3".

What happens when a side reaches zero?

That side's clock stops at 00:00 and is highlighted — in standard chess rules, that player has lost on time.

Can I pause mid-game?

Yes, press Pause to freeze both clocks, and Resume to continue from exactly where you left off.

Agree on the timing rules before starting

Set the starting time and increment before play. An increment adds time after a player completes a turn. For example, a five-minute game with a two-second increment starts each side at five minutes and adds two seconds when that player switches the clock.

Practice switching sides before the first move and use Pause for a shared interruption. Keep the page visible: browser suspension can delay updates, and a touch screen can register an unintended tap. This is a casual practice clock, not a certified tournament device. Reset before a new game so the previous remaining times do not carry over.
